Definition of ‘Emoji’: a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication. The new language to dominate the way text based content is now delivered, and a trend which is undeniable. They’re everywhere, from Twitter to Facebook to Instagram and Pinterest, emoji’s are being used by brands now more than ever.

Emoji’s are ideal to encourage reactions to your posts. They can set the tone and show the reader how you hope they’ll react. They allow you to let your audience exactly how you want them to feel without having to find the right words.

Once you understand the language you should have no problem selecting topically relevant emoji’s. The more relevant, the higher the engagement. Emoji’s provide another way of delivering content, and emoji based messaging is in some cases replacing the written word altogether. Communicating via a specific emotion can simply just be enough.

According to TechCo, over the past 12 months, the number of active customer messaging campaigns that include emoji’s has increased by 609%. More than 800 million emoji messages were sent in June 2016. And while emoji use continues to trend upward, brands are also doing a better job targeting their emoji campaigns to customers.

6 months ago Facebook released an entirely new way of engaging with both people and brands. Hitting the like button felt inappropriate when someone shared news and users were complaining that it wasn’t the right. Facebook then introduced new ways of engaging through ‘Facebook reactions’ allowing users to react to posts, for example: Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad and Angry.
