What is a hashtag?

You may have seen them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram yet you’re still baffled by the use of them. Don’t worry…you’re not alone. As most people have come to learn what they are, many are still unsure as how to use them effectively on their social media channels. Hashtags were born on Twitter but social networks have adopted them to track trending discussions and to essentially discover new content. Hashtags are commonly used by both brands and users to build awareness around a post, product or campaign, in return to increase impressions (how many times people have seen the post).

The hashtag you choose to use for your business is as important as your brand identity. However, the more specific your hashtag the more targeted your audience will be.

Twitter
Twitter hashtags are mainly used to denote specific topics of conversation. On Twitter there is a live ‘Trends’ sidebar which curates a list of hashtags you might be interested in, based on your tweets.

You may feel like sometimes you have nothing to share…but having nothing to say is never an excuse… there is always something to talk about. Trending hashtags on Twitter are great ways to find out about the latest topics and finding out about what people are talking about. Jump on hashtags that are trending to share your own content. Make the most of awareness days and share something you feel you want to reach a large audience.

Twitter hashtags, otherwise known as Twitter hours are used as a way of online networking. Network network network! Make those connections by getting involved with various twitter chats. You will be chatting with a group of like-minded individuals, and you might just find a group of people that are interested in your business, product or services! It might sound daunting, but it’s no scarier than introducing yourself to someone you don’t know in real-life! Actively participate and leave your brand at the forefront of the conversation. Be interested in what other people are doing and don’t just use hashtags as a means of self-promotion. Be inquisitive and build relationships, you never know where it could lead.

Facebook
It took a while for Facebook to join the hashtag party in fact not until 2013, but it is important to remember that hashtags on Facebook are similar, but not the same as hashtags on Twitter. Facebook users have already actively filtered their content by choosing what pages they like and friends that they have accepted. Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links on your post. Similar to Twitter, this helps people find posts about topics they’re interested in. When you click onto a hashtag you’ll then see a feed of posts that include the hashtag.

Join conversations, expand your reach and really see who is looking and engaging with your posts. Hashtags are a great way to help people and businesses in niche fields to find each other and find the conversation. By including a hashtag you’re opening up your chance to get in front of people who may not have seen your post otherwise, this can be monitored in your Facebook Insights. By using a hashtag on your Facebook page it can help give people an easy way to share information about that certain product or service.

Instagram
According to Simply Measured at least one hashtag averages 12.6 percent more engagement. Instagram allows users to filter by hashtags to find information on specific topics. Let’s say you are a restaurant or fitness company looking to engage with all the foodies out there. There are countless Instagram hashtags that are popular with food lovers such as: #Foodie #FoodPorn #CleanEating. A targeted audience goes hand in hand with better engagement.
